LOST LANDS (UNOFFICIAL)

esplude_BigType_4K-frames_FINAL-3.png

As part of the animation course at Ringling, students were tasked with creating a series of style frames using only typography.  From there, they were to be converted into a short animation promoting a music festival.

Festival Selection

Excision's Lost Lands was the only option that ever crossed my mind, partially because it's the only one I know (besides the big names like Coachella and Burning Man), but more importantly because of the theme.  That theme being dinosaurs, which all reasonable people would agree is the best one.

Font, Track, and Palette

A type-driven project needs a good type face, and for this one I chose Oxanium.  I thought its bold, loud forms fit the rhythmic pounding of the song I chose as a backing track for the promo.  It seemed obvious to use a song from the host of the festival, Excision, and even better to have one with the same saurian inspirations as the festival.  One of my favorites of his tracks, X-Rated, is characterized by integrating stomps and roars into the music, making it an ideal fit.  It's a fairly simplistic number, suiting a bold 3-color palette with plenty of contrast.

Style Frames

The final style frames the animation would be based on, one set in 16:9, and another in square format.
